Salt production

November 28, 2011  —  Tanzania

On the Indian Ocean Coast, north of Bagamoyo, I stumbled upon this salt production plant.

Big ponds are filled with a few centimetres of sea water. Then after sufficient evaporation of a good part of the water, the salt concentration becomes such that the salt start to turn solid.

Workers collect salt using shovels and rakes, then after packing this salt, transport it to the road where trucks will be loaded with the salt bags.

Workers live in this small village just a few metres away from the plant. They don't have running water or electricity. This is surprising since only a few metres away, the plant is supplied with electricity from an industrial generator.
